Fisherman's Wharf, 槟城渔人码头美食中心, Karpral Singh Drive, Penang

Penang, what's the first thing to look for? Food, of course, and hawker food as Penang is famous worldwide for hawker food. On my most recent trip to Penang, my friend said "I must take you to Fisherman's Wharf lah, it's at the new big hawker center at Karpal Singh Drive".

Therefore, from all my three (3) days stay on Penang Island, I went to this Fisherman's Wharf twice. First, my friend took me there, second, I took my friends from Kuala Lumpur there too, as they have not visited Penang for five years already.

Pasembor - price is according to the number and types of ingredients chosen

Let me start off with my favorite dish: Pasembor. This dish has different names to different races and also localities: such as Rojak Buah to Malays, "Zie Hu" (literal translation from Hokkien is Fresh Fish) to local Hokkien Chinese in Penang.

At this stall, you can choose from the different variety of fried food such as octopus (sotong), prawn fritters, potatoes, fish cakes, boiled eggs, fried chicken, and also the amount you like. Then the stall owner will add the toppings of strips of cucumber, jicama (sengkuang), and sauce (the degree of spiciness can be adjusted if you tell him you don't want too spicy) and topped with chopped peanuts and lime. To eat, we just have to mix them all up first so that the sauce is incorporated with all the ingredients, yummy!

Siew Long Pau - RM11.90

Grilled Chicken Rice Set

Why is it so well known now? This Fisherman's Wharf has been around for some time under different names but was renovated under new management, with a new facade, rearrangement of seats, stalls, and the car parking area.

Here are the 3 main reasons for its popularity:
1) There are many different types of hawker stalls selling cuisines ranging from Japanese, Korean, Chinese, to local favourites such as Char Kuey Tiow, Pasembor, Dim Sum, Crabs, Fish Head curry, rice sets to the ones that will cook for you dishes that are served with rice ("Tai Chow" type)

From top to right down: Siew Long Pau, Char Koay Teow, Tai Chow of Stir-fry Yau Mak, a pot of curry fish, and Char Yuk

The Char Koay Teow here is so in demand that the wait is very long. The taste is good and it is authentic Penang Char Koay Teow. A pass by my standard.

2) Ample Free car park lots: There is a huge open space for car parking in front, and it is FREE. Well, as we all know, Penangites are basically very stingy, so this free car park is a plus point! Moreover, on Penang Island, it is now very difficult to find car park spaces, as the island is small with narrow streets.

3) Location: This Fisherman's Wharf is facing the sea, with nice nautical sea view and cooling sea breeze. Situated just at the end of Karpal Singh Drive, I enjoyed a walk along this Karpal Singh Drive after a heavy dinner. Kapral Singh Drive is now a good seaside area for exercise such as jogging or strolling for both young and old.

The stalls inside are arranged such that all the stalls are located on the right-hand side and seating on the left-hand side facing the sea.

The only setback is the beverage/drinks counter. There is only one counter, everyone who wants to buy drinks has to queue, and it is very slow and time-consuming.

After a nice meal, take a stroll along Karpal Singh Drive. Nice place to take photos especially with the view of Penang Bridge in the background. Can also take an evening walk along Karpal Singh Drive first to work up your appetite in the evening and then over to Fisherman's Wharf for and relaxing satisfying dinner.
