Awesome Hobbiton Movie Set Tour in New Zealand

Mesmerised yourself in the 12 acres of Hobbiton Movie set, the location for The Lord of the Rings film trilogy and The Hobbit film series. It takes about 3 hours guided tour in this Alexander family sheep farm transformed by Sir Peter Jackson into this movie set.

This photo above is Bilbo Baggins home 'Bag End' and the oak tree on top is fake. Sir Peter Jackson had it reconstructed as the actual real tree would have grown older and become different as the filming of this series was over a fifteen years duration.

There are two places to start the tour, one is to drive your car to 'The Shire's Rest Cafe' or from I-site in the town of Matamata. I would suggest you stay a night in Matamata town and take the tour from the I-site town center in Matamata as the tour starts right then and you also save the trouble of driving 10 km to the Shire's Rest Cafe.

Lots of Hobbit Holes (Hobbits' Homes) for us to take photos

There are many groups of guided tours inside this movie set and can be quite packed if it's on the peak season. Tour guides give thorough explanations of this Middle Earth and we are given time to snap photos and selfies. My motel host advised us to go in the evening as there will be less tourists.

I still can't stop snapping away with my camera although it was my second trip here.

It is quite a distance to walk to the Green Dragon Inn

Entrance to the famous Green Dragon Inn

The tickets include a complimentary drink of traditional ales, an apple cider or non-alcholic ginger beer, exclusive to Hobbiton inside this Green Dragon Inn. I bought a muffin for NZD 4.50 at this cafe.

Awesome experience walking in Middle Earth with such an unequivocal beauty of land.

Tours operate daily from Matamata i-Site, 45 Broadway, Matamata from 9.30 am to 2.45pm with additional tours at 3.30pm, 4.15pm and 5.00pm depending on demand. The ticket price is NZD 79 for adult for approximately 3 hours tour. There are toilets and car parking lots behind the i-Site in Matamata.
