March is Oral Health Month with Colgate and Malaysian Dental Association Drive Oral Health Campaign

Month of March is Oral Health Month! You can get your teeth checked for free at selected dental clinics! Oral Health? Normally I only go to dentist if there's problem with my teeth. So what is oral health? According to World Health Organization (WHO) oral health is defined as “a state of being free from chronic mouth and facial pain, oral and throat cancer, oral infection and sores, periodontal (gum) disease, tooth decay, tooth loss, and other diseases and disorders that limit an individual’s capacity in biting, chewing, smiling, speaking, and psychosocial wellbeing.” (qoute from WHO here)

March is Oral Health Month, thus Colgate-Palmolive Malaysia (Colgate) and the Malaysian Dental Association (MDA) continue their annual partnership through an initiative to highlight healthy dental habits in conjunction with Oral Health Month 2019. ‘Whole Mouth Health’ is the theme for this year which expounds the importance of a holistic oral health. With this theme, lets focus more on the care of whole mouth with teeth, tongue, mouth and cheeks and practice comprehensive oral care habits instead of our normal focus on just teeth and tongue through daily brushing of teeth. (Oh dear a guilty confession, this is what I have been doing it daily, just brushing teeth and rinsing mouth only!) Therefore Colgate has upped its effort to spread oral health education among Malaysians through this campaign.

There are only nine (9) out of ten (10) Malaysian adults doing periodontal diseases and dental caries, and 75% are unaware of the need to maintain oral hygiene as stated in National Oral Health Survey in 2010. So Colgate hopes to turn this ignorance into awareness of oral hygiene among Malaysians through its 'Whole Mouth Health' campaign.

During this forum, Amanda Klemm, Marketing Director of Colgate-Palmolive South ASEAN HUB said: "Statistics have shown that 94 % of adults needed oral hygiene advice. As a trusted oral care partner for Malaysians, Colgate hopes to address that and is honored to partner with the Malaysian Dental Association once more to educate and share pertinent information about oral care.”

Dr Leong Kei Joe, President-Elect of the Malaysian Dental Association added  “Many Malaysians today over-consume sugar which affects one’s overall oral health, and so it is important to remember that prevention is better than cure. Fortunately, hope is not lost as there are preventive measures to take to maintain oral hygiene.” Ya, over consumption of sugar is not good for teeth, so  remember to cut down on sugar,  and also discourage children from eating too much sweets and sweet sugary chocolates, huh.

Klemm elaborated: “Drawing back to the theme of ‘Whole Mouth Health’, Colgate and the MDA implore Malaysians to see oral care beyond just teeth, and instead consider tongue, cheeks and gum too to form a holistic oral health care. In today’s technological advancements in dentistry, there are many methods that will help protect the whole mouth from bacteria, food stains and dental plaque,”

Free Check-ups in 560 Dental Clinics
With this Oral Health Month March 2019, there will be efforts to educate Malyasians on the meaning of aholistic oral health apporach and Colgate has also increaded Malaysians accessibiluty t dental services, which includes free dental check-ups where 560 private dental clinics nationwide participated.

Colgate believes that prevention is better than cure. Therefore Colgate encourages self dental care and the importance of a twice-yearly dentist visit to ensure teeth stay cleaner, last longer and prevent dental problem and diseases from developing.
Here, I would like to share a story of a friend who has been having sour throat for over 6 months and her throat and face was swollen. She spent lots of time and money visiting doctors and also go on traditional medicines. Finally, what cured her is her visit to Oral Health Center and treated by specialist doctor there!

Colgate introduces a new Colgate Total toothpaste in conjunction with Oral Health Month 2019.This new Colgate Total toothpaste is formulated with Dual-Zinc to actively fight bacteria and Arginine to enhance the delivery of Dual-Zinc throughout entire mouth. Colgate toothpaste offers whole mouth care in just one tube, and this new Colgate Total toothpaste is available in retail stores and pharmacies nationwide. There six variants available, and costs RM12.99 for 150g and RM22,99 for twin pack.

Let's hope Malaysians will adopt a more protective measure about oral health in a more holistic manner.
