Bunga Raya Popiah, Melaka Famous Street Food

Walking along Jalan Bunga Raya, I saw a stall by the roadside with long queue of people waiting. The immobile food stall does not have any fancy decorations or was it colorful. Curious, I went close to this modest stall. Upon checking on the internet, I realize that this is the famous best popiah in Melaka! So, I too join in the queue as curiosity got the better of me, the crazy foodie.

This Bunga Raya Popiah is the best pork lard popiah in Melaka. It is non-halal. This immobile food stall is one of the earliest food stalls selling popiah. As time goes by, it has gained a reputation not only amongst the locals but also among the tourist visiting Melaka.

Since this stall is by the roadside, thus it has to be a takeaway. There are no tables or chairs for customers to sit down and eat there and then. This type of popiah is only of the normal wet type, not the crispy fried in oil type.

I bought 3 popiah rolls, one-piece is no chili and two pieces with spicy chili. But actually, there is not much difference as the spicy type also has very little chili. So it is not very spicy. They are all individually wrapped and cost RM6.00 per piece.

Bunga Raya Popiah - RM 6.00

There is a large amount eggs, in this Bunga Raya Popiah. This Popiah consists of jicama in big sizes, not the usual thinly sliced ones. The other usual ingredients must be chopped garlic, sliced carrot, and others. This must be their trade secret, as there is a sign on display saying on photos or videos. I loved best is the most unique taste is the pork lard inside. I can feel the crispy crunch of fried pork lard when I bite into the popiah. Very nice indeed. Pork lard is very popular among older Chinese folks and they love the crunchy feel when biting into it. But, nowadays, with more awareness of healthy food, and trying to avoid fat in meat. So I think maybe this pork lard may not be popular with youngsters. By the way, I overheard one old man behind me asking for more pork lard.

This Bunga Raya Popiah is situated near the Madam King's Mall along Jalan Bunga Raya. There is a big parking compound at the end of the road which charges RM3 per entry. If parking on roadside, we need to buy parking coupons which are RM0.40 only for half an hour. These parking coupons can be bought from stalls or certain shops if we enquire. They are sold at RM4.00 a book with 10 pages inside.
