Heritage Village Nyonya Food

"Heritage? What type of heritage food are we going to eat?" These are the questions popping up in my head when told we are doing a review on Heritage Village. In Malaysia, we have various races, therefore we are lucky to be able to savor different heritage flavors such as Malay, Chinese, Indian and others. But Nyonya food is a class of its own resulting from the Peranakan culture (Babas & Nyonyas) with the assimilation of cultures from the inter marriages of Malay and Chinese dating back to early 15 century. Nyonya cooking is a fusion of many traditional ingredients of Chinese food and Malay spices and herbs.

From a humble beginning and a passion to served fine quality nasi lemak in 1970, founder Madam Molly Khoo perfected her family's recipe through different rice grains mixed with fresh coconut milk. Over a span of 3 generations and from a food stall in a coffee shop, Heritage Village today brings forth the family heritage secret and a taste of Penang Nyonya Heritage.

Heritage Jiu Hu Char is an essential dish in Nyonya cuisine. Jiu Hu Char is a must have for Penang Hokkien families on festive seasons especially on Chinese new reunion dinner. Finely sliced sengkuang, carrots, dried squid and mushrooms are fried to perfection and eaten with fresh leafy lettuce. This dish cost RM12.90. Heritage Lor Bak Platter is also RM12.90, made up of fried tauhu, lor bak, century eggs with pickled ginger and fresh slices of cucumber.

While I was eating this Heritage Nasi Lemak King Combo, suddenly I realised I was just picking up the grains of rice and putting it into my mouth. The rice in this nasi lemak is a class above, fragrant and infused with just the right amount of coconut milk. So, to me nasi lemak is a must try dish at Heritage Village Nyonya Restaurant. This Heritage Nasi Lemak King Combo is served with sambal sotong, Chicken Rendang and Acar Awak at RM18.90

I love the Heritage Otak Fried Rice. It is unique because rice is fried with otak-otak accompanied with fried egg, chicken and pie-tee. This set is only RM15.90

Heritage Baba plate with Jiu Hu Char, Assam prawns and curry chicken at RM19.90

Assam Pedas Fish cost RM13.90 is a classic nyonya style sour, spicy stew fish served with rice

I personally love this Heritage Assam Laksa as the soup consistency is just right and I am able to see pieces of fish. The sourness of the soup is very important in Assam laksa as at some other places it is either too sour or too dilute, but this Heritage Assam Laksa here suits me well. Assam Laksa is made up of a thick rice noodles served in aromatic fish-based tamarind broth topped with shredded pineapple, cucumber, mint leaves, lemon grass, onion, lettuce and assam flower. It is RM19.90 per bowl.

Har Mee consist of yellow noodles and vermicelli boiled in prawn broth served with fresh prawns, boiled eggs, bean sprouts and kangkong. Whereas Lam Mee is made up of thick clear chicken broth served with yellow noodles topped with prawns, fish cake, omelette slices and chicken slices. They are each sold at RM11.90 per bowl.

Curry fish head

Durian ABC with ice cream is RM10.90 and Durian Cendol is RM9.90 and a glass of Cendol on the top right is RM6.90

Ah! Bubur Cha Cha! My favorite dessert! This Heritage Durian Bubur Cha Cha is a must try, especially for Bubur Cha Cha lovers. The trick here is we must stir and mix up the durian into the Bubur Cha Cha soup so that it is creamy. Yummy!

There are up to 53 choices of food, drinks and desserts in Heritage Village Nyonya. After being served with such an array of good food and delicious desserts, it was a satisfying Peranakan dining experience.
