EduCity Achieving Clean Energy With Solar PV for Sustainable Renewable Energy

EduCity supports Malaysia's government of clean energy goal by signing a Triparite Agreement on Sustainable Renewable Energy with GSPARX Sdn Bhd and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) on 29 July 2019, at Hilton Hotel Kuala Lumpur. This Zero Capital Agreement will bring in savings of RM2.22 million of savings in 25 years for Iskandar EduCity

Sustainable Renewable Energy
Before elaborating further here's a quick check on the definitions of sustainable energy and renewable energy. According to Wikipedia:
Sustainable energy is a principle in which human use of energy "meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." Sustainable energy strategies generally have two pillars: cleaner methods of producing energy and energy conservation. Renewable energy is energy that is collected from renewable resources, which are naturally replenished on a human timescale, such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves, and geothermal heat. (source: Wikipedia)
Sustainable and renewable energy is the main criteria we have to set to preserve the environmentMalaysian government has set a goal to achieve 20% clean energy thus it is timely that EduCity, a 300-acre fully integrated education hub shows support and kicks off this renewable energy program with the onsite solar PV installation.

Signing Tripartite Agreement

The signing of agreement is an important milestone in green initiatives by EduCity. SARE, or Supply Agreement for Renewable Energy, will allow Iskandar EduCity to benefit from its onsite solar PV generation at ZERO upfront cost. Under this clean energy scheme, not only Iskandar EduCity will enjoy savings on electricity bills but also sell the excess solar energy from the solar PV installation to TNB and obtain a 'one-on-one' offset basis to further offset electricity bills via the Net Energy Metering (NEM) scheme. SARE is offered by subsidiary of TNBX Sdn Bhd.

This initiative of clean energy was led by Digital Pulse, a unit under Iskandar Innovations Sdn Bhd (IISB), a wholly owned subsidiary of Iskandar Investment Bhd, operating under EduCity. Currently two main locations in EduCity education hub had been identified by IISB. They are Multi Varsity Complex which would generate 15 kWp and a stretch of walkway with 130kWp, totally 282kWp. With the installation of solar PV system, these two locations would generate 344,816kWh of annual energy supply. This translate into a total savings of RM2.2Million for 25 years.  The expected completion date is February 2020.

Clean energy, sustainable and renewable energy is a noble initiative. I applaud EduCity for this initiative in contribution to a green environment. The results of this SARE program of solar PV installation by EduCity can:
 1) Offset 220 Metric tones of CO2
2) Greenhouse gas emission avoided by 4032 tree seedlings grown in 10 years
3) or 960,000 km distance driven by an average passenger vehicle annually

Welcome Remarks by Datuk Ir Khairil Anwar, Chairman of EduCity Iskandar Sdn Bhd

EduCity

They are: University of Southamptom Malaysia, University of Reading Malaysia (UoRM), Multimedia University (MMU), Raffles University Iskandar (RUI), Netherlands Maritime Institute of Technology (NMIT), Kolej MDIS Malaysia, Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed), Malborough College Malaysia (MCM) and Raffles American School (RAS). EduCity provides an integrated campus experience with ready access to shared amenities. A main stadium of 6000 seater, 1500 seater indoor arena, 500 seater aquatic centre stadium. Student Village for student accommodation, recreation and sport activities and coming up of future up grades of New Warm Pool, New Petrol station, Student village upgrade, New Rugby field, and Student Hub building with student lounge, music studio, dance studio and 24 hour McDonalds Drive-Through.

Dato' Haji Nor Azman Bin Mufti, Chief Ventures Officer, Tenaga Nasional Berhad
This project will be funded and undertaken by GSPARX Sdn Bhd, our own homegrown company, backed by 70 years of TNB's experience in electricity supply. To date GSPARX Sdn Bhd has secured a total a 60 projects with a total capacity of 6000kWp from all customers segments. Half of it will be completed by the end of this year. Dato' Haji Nor Azman added that with this solar PV, we can say that for every sun hour the solar energy generated in EduCity is equivalent of offset greenhouse emission a normal car drive from Bukit Kayu Hitam to Johor Bahru with a distance of 772 km via PLUS highway.

All smiles after the signing of Tripartite Agreement. Congratulations towards a clean energy and sustainable renewable energy by Iskandar EduCity!

We owe our future generation a clean environment and long lasting life for earth. Let's reduce carbon footprint and look into ways towards sustainable and renewable energy. One of the ways is by installing solar PV where not only we can take care of our electricity bill but also earn extra by selling to TNB the surplus energy! Residential Solar Plan by GSPARX Sdn Bhd is available, please checkout www.gsparx.com or telephone toll free no: 1 300 80 7828 for details.
