"There is this Big Bowl Ramen, wanna try?" Ani, my daughter's friend asked when we were visiting Georgetown, Penang. We were then driven to My Voice Cafe & Studio, at Kristal Point, Bayan Lepas, Penang. I was surprised to see the huge bowls on the tables in the cafe. "Such a big bowl! Can we finish it?" I was thinking to myself.
There are four types of Big Bowl ramen in the menu. First the Genki Kara Ramen which is spicy noodles with seafood, second The Pork Mayo Ramen, third The Buta Kakuni Ramen and fourth the Beef Chilli Ramen. There are many other dishes on menu from Western dishes such as Fish & Chips, Chicken Maryland, Chicken Cordon Bleu, Japanese Food sets and A-la-carte dishes.
Of course, we ordered the big bowl ramen, the one we heard so much about. We took the Buta Kakuni Ramen at this The Voice Cafe & Studio. The size of the big bowl is the same, but the quantity inside depends on the number of pax you ordered. For example, 2 pax is RM35 which has the least inside, 3 pax is RM49, 4 pax is Rm62 and 5 pax is RM72, which is full to the brink of the bowl. This was price when I was there in May 2015, but it may be different now.
There was a big piano in the cafe and it was played by a lovely girl. So while enjoying this Big Bowl Ramen, we were accompanied by live music!
While researching for more information on this Big Bowl Ramen, I found out that it is popular in many countries. There are even events called "The Big Bowl Ramen Challenge" in a few countries such as at Komachi Japanese Restaurant in Australia. This time, we were at the restaurant not for the challenge, but to enjoy the speciality, ambience and music.
